I have a love/hate relationship with retinol. I had to stop using it in the fall because I started peeling BAD several days after using retinol. I have been using it again once a week, I wait half an hour after washing my face as someone suggested, and it's been better, but still - 3 or 4 days later my skin is flaking.
Is that supposed to be good? And will it do that FOREVER or will it stop at some point?

I got a prescription retinoid about 2 years ago to help with discoloration and my pores. I used it once and my skin was awful. I went back to the derm and they said it was normal and to keep going with treatment every 2 to every 3 nights. It literally took 3 months for peeling to stop! My main point is you have to build your skin up to it. Don't exfoliate or pick at it. If you take long breaks in between treatments, it will put your skin back at square 1. Basically, look at it like this: If you work your way up to running a mile then take a couple months off, you will have to build yourself back up. When you know you are going in the sun, wear a higher SPF Don't use powder foundation that requires "intense" blending as this is flaking off more skin and irritating it bare. Also, when putting on powder, make sure to pat. I can tell a HUGE difference in my skin, but IT DOES GET BETTER and results are worth it! Keep waiting 30 minutes to ensure the skin is dry before applying too! I am looking though to go to a retinol since my skin has improved, so what do you use?

Is that only for precription strength retinol? I've been using Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion night for a long time now, and have never had any ill effects, no peeling or anything...maybe it is just because it is a weaker formula?

Well, I posted but an mot sure where it went. Thanks for the very helpful info, chels! Love the analogy with running, guess I've been stopping every time it get sore. Chels and mberteig, I am using Skinceuticals Retinol .5, they also have a stronger version, their 1.0.

If I were you I would stick with .5 then add in the 1.0 when you feel like you're getting used to .5!

I alternate with the PTR PM fusion with the REN Glycolactic acid . I did it every other night until I got flaky. Then I bumped it up to every other day for a treatment and made sure to use my clarisonic acne brush ( it's a bit rougher) to slough of the dead skin. After that I made sure to use a facial oil and a sleep mask on my days with no treatments.

Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to retinols/retin-a.
Chels gave some great advice, I just want to add that in addition to only using it twice a week in the beginning, you may also want to buffer it with a bland moisturizer.
So cleanse, apply moisturizer, wait as long as possible and then apply retin-a (or retinol).
It does get better for most people, just use it very slow in the beginning.

From what I read about retinol so far, flaking is common, and most derm recommend you keep at it for a month at least until your skin finally adjust. I finally shipped back my defective PTR retinol PM (no explanation on the cause of the defect yet) and immediately used the compensation giftcard to buy another PTR retinol. I won't be trying it until the fall tho. =X
