I've been on a bit of a quest for lipsticks, but keep getting disappointed because I have been judging from the shade it looks like on the product itself. Like a closeup of the lipstick. That doesn't work. So then I tried to look up swatches, especially on pale skin tones like mine, that's worked a bit better. I have very light skin and maybe yellow undertones or neutral. My lips have a natural purple tint to them. I used to wear whatever lip colors I wanted, from bright reds to corals, oranges, deep purples etc. I find with my looks now, generally conservative with browns or purples, that neutral browns work. I got UD Gash and anything with a hint of red in it looks VERY red and bold on me. Anyone have tips on how they have met with success finding colors that work for them? And if I can make this question a three-parter - what color should you be going for depending on what you've done with your eye makeup? Do you try to match tone? Lastly, how does this differ for work vs night out vs mellow day at home? I feel like I am really missing something here, I can match and blend eyeshadows and liners now like crazy and 95% of the time i consider the results a success. But lips are kind of a mystery to me....help if you can please by sharing your secrets and tips!

Honestly it was a lot of trial and error. When I was initially getting into makeup, I couldn't really tell unless I tried it on. But now after becoming a full-fledged makeup addict, I can just swatch and know that I will like it (unless it's a fairly unusual shade). But I have my "stand-bys" that I know will work everytime (warm pinks, corals and berries).
I guess it really depends what you're going for. I generally use the rule of one bold feature at a time. But that can be bent a little (like classic smoky eye and dark red lip). But I guess there is no hard and fast rules I use. With neutral eyes I pair any lip, with purple I usually go pink or mauve, with green I go with a soft peach, blue I go with a nude. Sometimes it is hard to tell if it's a look I don't usually do and I might have to change it up...
For work I generally go with MLBB shades everytime, as it's safe but still makes me look alive (same for eyes, MEBB?) For night's out, I definitely do, more is more... lol. But everything is a bit louder or darker. I guess it depends on what my "focal point" is. At home, I either go with nothing, or I go a bit crazy (since no one else will see it).
I guess, as a "lip" girl, most of my knowledge just comes from trial and error. Mostly I just try to match the "feel" of the makeup (or the feel of what I'm trying to achieve).

That's an interesting chart! I guess I'm medium? I guess I generally agree with the ones for me, but I've never been keen on brown lip colors. I think flattering lip color plays into a lot of different factors though, like your skin tone, lip color (it is important as it can change the tone and intensity of a lip color), hair color, eye color, etc. And it also has to do with your style, something might look nice but not necessarily jive with your own "look" (like me and browns). There's also the MUFE lipstick finder (came out a few years ago?) which took into account a few of these factors...if only I could find it.... This was the wheel they has instores, but I can't find the online one?

excellent chart! Thanks for sharing kenny! I guess I have medium lips. At the beginning at the spring, I was on the hunt for pink lips, I've come to realize that orange/ coral color lips actually look better on me. My search resulted in no less than 4 or 5 pink lipsticks I barely wear. Once I found that perfect orange and coral lippie, I use those all the time. I have a couple of purples that are nice on me too. Do you guys match your blush to your lip color? I read that once; I've been doing that and it makes a world of difference. The same article also said to mix warms and cools on the eyes and cheeks. It was good advice!

Found this and thought it was interesting: I love seeing this like this (YAY VISUALS!) but I agree with it being a lot of trial and error though.. I'm a really bad judge of my face (skin tone, eye shape, face shape, lip colour.. you name it) and I've tried both rose and brown-ish shades.. Oh man did those look horrible on me (in my opinion anyways). I feel like it's really whatever YOU think looks good on you that matters. If you try a colour and you think it looks fantastic then work it I generally try to go with the bold lips/neutral eye or bold eye neutral lip combo and totally tend to disregard the whole mellow day bold night thing.. I feel like it should be whatever makes you comfortable and you should do what you want. Maybe not helpful.. but it's my 2-cents

Haha alisg I like graphics too! And I do agree it should be based on what I like but almost anytime I put on a lip color I feel like something is off....somehow it doesn't match. I'm not sure what my sticking point is though...if it doesn't actually go OR I'm just not used to more defined lips. I LOVE dark plums like UD Apocalypse and I have Too Faced Divine Wine on order, but pulling off a look without a fade into an ombré lip is a bit hard for me to do.

I love them bold colours but sometimes it just makes me go "Whoa.. maybe not". I think sometimes it is because you're not used to the bold... You get so used to looking in the mirror at your natural lip colours that when you put on something SO different it just freaks you out (or in my case makes me think that I'm on the way to clown face). I've been told that a good way to get used to colours that weird you out is to just dab them on so that the colour is there but maybe not as bright/bold as it would be if you smeared (is that the word? It looks weird) it on. Sometimes it takes baby steps! I hear you about the dark plums. I'm in love with anything almost neon and anything so dark that I basically look like a goth in my black work clothes haha but wearing them on the everyday makes me a little nervous sometimes.

Found this and thought it was interesting: See, charts like this make me a little sad though as the choices are so narrow. For example, according to this I couldn't wear, or shouldn't wear, pink/fuchsia shades of lipstick at all. There are also charts like this one but I'm 'eh' on this to. My personal rule of thumb is if I swatch it and like it I buy it. I have bright reds, cool tone reds, ox blood reds, and they all work for me. I have light purple and dark purple lipstick, I've got pinks like Candy Yum Yum (but I always wear a lipliner with it) or deeper like Melt Cosmetics Shady Lady. So in my opinion it's really a personal preference, what you're comfortable with, and skin tone. My favorite thing to base my color choices off of though is Robert Jones color theory video though, I love it and it explains so much in just 15 minutes. www.youtube.com/watch?v=63pogF_ZiQk&sns=emSent from my Pokeball using Tapatalk Attachments:

I tend to shy away from bolder lip colors but the last time I wore one, I got lots of compliments.
I just read in a couple different places that some women use the tips of their fingernails (I guess where the fingerprint is) as a close match to their lip color. I guess they use the fingertip for quick swatching, and maybe to avoid sanitary issues by applying sampler lipsticks directly to the lip.
But.... color-wise, my fingertips are way lighter than my lips.
Did I misunderstand this rule of thumb? [excuse the pun]

I've found that undertone of the color matters more than the color itself. Most browns are warm-toned and look terrible on me. The occasional raisin is cool enough to look good on me. Both of those charts say I shouldn't wear some of my favorite lipstick colors (deep reds, deep berries, blackberry, plums) and I should be wearing colors I mostly hate (coral, beige, sandy pink.) I can tell if I'm going to like a lipstick with a hand-swatch, so that's usually how I pick them. I don't match to my eye shadow but I do try and either match or oppose intensity - vampy eyes with a red lip can work and vampy eyes with a neutral lip can work but vampy eyes with a plum or mid-tone lip make me look like an escapee from the '90s.

I have a hard time picking lipsticks because my lips are such a deep pink they pull everything darker and cooler. So from much experience I've determined that anything cool will look much pinker on me, and oranges will actually look more neutral. Nude shades tend to look weird because they're typically much lighter than my natural lip (which bugs the hell out of me because sometimes I really want a nude lip!) I'll post a picture later when I have a camera with internet access (no wifi allowed in the hospital due to security reasons.)But the biggest tip I can think of is take into account your natural lip color and how it will react with the lipstick shade.
