Hi all! I will be moving soon. I have a lot of moving experience, but this is the first time I will be moving a significant amount of makeup. What tips and tricks and words of caution can you offer? I’m specifically wondering --
• How much protection do things really need? For most items, can I put in a small box and just make sure it’s packed securely (stuffed with paper to prevent rattling) like any other box? • Are there certain non-glass items (e.g., palettes) that need to be individually wrapped? (Say it ain’t so!) • What the HELL do I do with all my nail polish? • Muji drawers, nail polish rack, and organizer – do I just bubble wrap these to death and secure? • What am I forgetting, and where are the unpredictable time sucks? • Have you had any disasters and what would you have done differently?
I have professional movers and am only moving a few miles. I will be packing myself, however. As always, your advice and experience are appreciated!

I would not trust movers with anything, even though its not far they will throw your pretties around. If it were me, I would save my sephora and ulta boxes/ and packing paper and put the pretties in them so they are easily recognized. For the polishes I would take and wrap them individually, and then pack them in layers in the boxes with bubble wrap. I wouldn't think the palettes would have to be individually wrapped just packed so tight that they can not wiggle around. I would rather be safe than sorry, so extra time packing will save you the tears if they get smashed/shattered. I would make sure they don't sit out in the heat to long since it will be in the summer.

Honestly, when I move, I just put all my most valuable items in my own car and move it myself. This includes my makeup collection. No matter how good the movers are, I don't trust them to treat my products gently enough for them to make the trip all right. Can you fit your makeup collection in your car? If not, would it be a big deal to make a few round trips? That way you don't have to be insanely careful in packing it up and you know it will be safe, since you're transporting it all yourself.

LariTheLoud, I probably can't fit the whole collection in the car - especially with other things like jewelry, important papers, etc. But yeah, I can make a few round trips and that wouldn't be the worst thing. And you're right - that way I wouldn't feel like I have to wrap every single thing in 12 layers of bubble wrap. calamityjane, good call on the nail polish. It's basically like dishes. Wrap once individually, then wrap individuals into small bundles! I may *cough, sputter* have a trunk crammed full of empty Sephora boxes waiting to go to the recycle bin. Wow, that was really prescient of me not to get rid of them yet! *whistles innocently* Thanks, ladies.

we have a SU v for things like this.... (Not just makeup) my husband is an artist and we never let anyone touch the pottery, sculpture and paintings. They are all one of a kind so we feel more comfortable doing it ourselves, or hiring specific art movers. My husband does a lot of shows so we had to buy a SUV for this. It worked out well for my items too when we moved into our new house a couple years ago. Not only did I use it for the art, but also for the electronics. I hate movers moving flat screens.

I just moved last month and I had never moved makeup with me before. Honestly I got a spare purse and put all of my palettes and brushes inside of that, same with my nail polishes. Anything I was afraid would crack or break (aka already broken shadows), I wrapped in bubble wrap and had in the front seat next to me.

SallieSunshine I just saw this tip...put an extra cotton ball or cotton pad inside your powder cosmetics to keep them from breaking...I don't know if it's too late...but hopefully you can try it!!
