I cross-posted this on BT but I figured I'd find more knowledgable ladies over here, so here is my question! I'm looking to treat myself to some new brushes. As some of you may know, I'm slowly upgrading my el cheapo brush set to quality brushes one-by-one (or two by two) at about a rate of once per month. It's time for me to invest in another brush! Do any of you have experience with both Hakuhodo and MAC brushes? I would like to buy an angled contour brush next. MAC is a little more reasonable and I can get free shipping. I cannot find a way to bypass Hakuhodo's $9 shipping fee, and I will have to pay tax. So the totals for the two brushes are: Hakuhodo - $49 (including shipping) + Tax MAC 168 - $35 + tax (unless I go to the store in Delaware and buy tax free) Is the Hakuhodo brush significantly better than the MAC 168 that it is worth the cost difference? If not, is there a different contour brush from Hakuhodo that you would recommend over the MAC 168? What other alternatives would you recommend for a contour brush that is worth the cost? This might be my first time trying out Hakuhodo brushes, so I hope I won't be disappointed. Thanks!

I've switched out most of my brushes for Sigma and have been really really impressed with the quality for the price, but I keep hearing about Hakuhodo. I'm intriqued. I literally need maybe 1 or 2 more brushes to be out of the cheap-o Groupon ones.

So, I asked about Hakuhodo brushes on another beauty app I frequent and makeup mama (what she gets called but is seriously the most informative and well trained MUA I have ever met in my life and is the real deal) was nice enough to give me this very long response. Now I was asking about Billy B brushes and Hakuhoho, hence the mentioning of them in this reply. It's long, but worth it: Here's my take on Billy B. brushes. I own a majority of them. When I first came to Beautylish, (2012) I think... Alma can correct me if I am wrong, Billy's Master Set had already sold out, and the only option I had was to purchase them individually. These brushes are what I would consider mid range bushes in terms of price. They are very lightweight, (birch wood handles) and Billy made these brushes with the makeup artist in mind. Why? Because all too often, a majority of the brushes that are on the market are shaped and cut in such a way that a professional MUA has a hard time working with the shape of the brush because they are so generic. I can't tell you how many times I have cut the bristle of a brush because a makeup artist looks at a brush and says, 'I don't get this shape, but if I take my shears and trim the length, it'll make a great short shader that I can use to really pack color on a lash line, and if I bias cut it, I can also use it to make a strong line on a crease... With Billy's brushes, the manner in which he has designed them makes sense because when I first looked at his brushes they excited me. Why? Because of all the different things that could be done with them just based on how the bristle is cut. With Billy's brushes, there are endless possibilities and that is wherein the absolute wonder and joy of using his brushes comes into play. These are makeup brushes that are geared to how an artist thinks, and in this particular sense, this is what makes these brushes unique and an absolute joy to own. There is only one thing that I don't particularly care for: The aluminum sleeves. In my opinion, it cheapens the brush in an aesthetic sense, and if you tap the brush on the sleeve too hard, they are easily dented. The brushes being sold on Beautylish now were made by a different manufacturer than his first series, so maybe that issue has been addressed. Overall, I think these are great brushes and if cared for properly will last you a very very long time, and considering the cost of higher end brushes on the market these days, Billy's set will give you great bang for the buck. I have one serious issue with Hakuhodo brushes: Once you touch one, you will be forever jaded and compare all other brushes to Hakuhodo. Hakuhodo makes several series of brushes that are differentiated by the type of bristle used, ferrule material and handle composition. If you are looking for a 'bling' factor, I suggest looking at their flagship S100 series. Bright vermilion handles, gold plated ferrules, top virgin cut bristle... then this is your series. In my opinion, what makes Hakuhodo brushes is the type and the quality of bristle used. Every series in this line uses the same top notch bristle, so in my opinion, you really can't go to wrong with any brush Hakuhodo makes. That being said, since the quality of these brushes are unsurpassed, you have to treat them as the delicate works of art that they are. One cannot cleanse them or store them like 'normal run of the mill brushes.' That Dawn Soap and Olive Oil cleansing routine will kill a Hakhodo, and these brushes do not need to be cleansed as often as a normal brush would based on the caliber of the bristle. In addition, these are brushes that you can't throw in a brush stand for extended periods of time because it effects how the bristle shifts and sits. If you don't use them often, you need to store them in a cool dry environment laying flat. Since there are so many bristle types, there is a learning curve to using these brushes because of the resiliency of some of the bristle types. I you want to try Hakuhodo's I suggest starting with the K and J series, and here are the brushes I suggest taking a closer look at: H3085 K002 = B002: This is where your skin type comes into play. Read the features section on this brush and you'll understand why. K004 = B004 K006 K015 = B015 K020 J142 = BJ142 J122 J214R H2152 291 G5556 (My favorite foundation brush of all time.) I cannot live without this brush. The above listed brushes are some of my favorites for shadow and powder application. If you want to go with a set, in your price range, I suggest going with the Basic 10 piece brush set. In this set, you'll get a good range of the basic brushes needed for the eyes , brows and facial product application. Hope this helped. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Wow! Thank you so much for all the awesome information, ittyxbittyxme ! It sounds like once I finally do splurge on Hakuhodo I'll never look back. That's a dangerous road to go down. Still, this is really valuable information both for Billy B brushes and Hakuhodo. Thanks again!

I'm actually considering doing a Beautylish order instead and getting Anna Sui Mystic Rose and Wayne Goss #12..... just because of free shipping and 10 dollars off, since it'll be my first time ordering.

And there's the option of paying later so you can try it and have 45 days to see if you like it or not before being charged.

ittyxbittyxme, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the Billy B & Hakuhodo brushes. I have two Billy B brushes and was wondering about their background.

Which Sugarpill shadows did you get? Sent from my Pokeball using Tapatalk Birthday Girl and Lumi! You're going to love them! Lumi is spur pretty over blue and green eyeshadows, or just by itself. I may or may not be two pigments short of having the whole collection (minus the neon ones)....I have a problem. Sent from my Pokeball using Tapatalk

Sent from my Pokeball using Tapatalk I know this will just be the start for me before I start collecting them all. I really wanted Goldilux too, but I figured I'd try out Birthday Girl and Lumi first and get Goldilux later; I have a ton of golds in my collection as it is. I can wait! I'm super glad i picked up Birthday Girl, though, because I don't yet have another pink in my collection that is a similar shade of pink.
